WHAT IS ACTIVE RELEASE TECHNIQUE (A.R.T)?
ART is a patented, state of the art movement based massage technique that treats problems with muscles, tendons, ligaments, fascia and nerves caused by excessive scar tissue formation. Headaches, back pain, carpal tunnel syndrome, shin splints, shoulder pain, sciatica, plantar fasciitis, knee problems, and tennis elbow are just a few of the many conditions that can be resolved quickly and permanently with ART. These conditions all have one important thing in common: they are often a result of overused muscles and excessive build up of scar tissue.
WHAT IS SCAR TISSUE AND HOW IS IT DIFFERENT FROM NORMAL MUSCLE?
Damage to muscle by trauma or repetitive stress causes the body to try to repair itself with inflexible scar tissue.
Texture– Unlike supple healthy tissue, scar tissue is tough and fibrous. Scar tissue can feel gritty or firm upon touch.
Pain– Scar tissue has a high concentration of pain receptors in relation to normal healthy tissue. Areas with high amounts of scar tissue are more prone to painful flare ups.
Decreased Range of Motion– Scar tissue lacks the flexibility of healthy tissue. Scar tissue after a surgery or trauma such as a car accident, can make it difficult to rotate your neck or lift your shoulder.
HOW DOES A PERSON DEVELOP SCAR TISSUE?
Over-used muscles (and other soft tissues) change in three important ways:
- Acute conditions (pulls, tears, collisions, etc)
- Accumulation of small tears (micro-trauma)
- Not getting enough oxygen (hypoxia)
Each of these factors can cause your body to produce tough, dense scar tissue in the affected area. This scar tissue binds up and ties down tissues that need to move freely. As scar tissue builds up, muscles become shorter and weaker, tension on tendons causes tendinitis and nerves can become entrapped or impinged. This can lead to reduced range of motion, loss of strength, and pain. If a nerve is entrapped you may develop tingling, numbness, and weakness.
WHAT IS AN ART TREATMENT LIKE?
Every ART session is a combination of examination and treatment. As muscles release during each session, your practitioner will be able to identify hidden areas of restriction and get to the root of your muscle imbalance. The ART® provider treats the abnormal tissue by using their hand to create a precisely directed tension to the muscle as the patient goes through the full range of motion. This significantly improves the ability to break up deep scar tissue.
These treatment protocols – over 500 specific moves – are unique to ART®. They allow providers to identify and correct the specific problems that are affecting each individual patient. ART® is not a cookie-cutter approach.
