Dr. Josh’s Story

“Growing up, I always saw my father in pain from his low back. I always wished there was something I could do to help. He herniated 2 discs in his low back when he was a football player in his early 20’s. When he went to our family doctor he was given pain pills and muscle relaxers and told to rest. Over the next 20 years every time he went back to the doctor he was given another pill for something new.

By the time I was born, he was on 17 different medications, weighed over 400 pounds and the discs in his low back had worn down to bone on bone and was constantly pinching on nerves. When we went to see the spinal surgeon he told us that my father was too large, on too many medications and too much of a liability to operate on. I’ve never seen someone so sad, thinking that he was going to have to live the rest of his life in this kind of pain.

We had heard about gastric bypass surgery and considered it. If he could lose the weight, maybe reduce the medications, in turn he could get the back surgery he needed. After the bypass surgery, my father’s gallbladder got infected and he ended passing away from a staph infection. He died December 17th, 2007 at the age of 58.

Arizona Medical and Sports Rehab was made for people like my father. Not only to help the patients who already have severe chronic low back pain but also to prevent patients from ever walking down that path.
